This short one has three distinct sections. A prayer (1–2), a taunt (3–4), and a statement of self pity (5–7). I picture a man talking to himself alone, slightly discouraged. It’s worthy of note that this is the first psalm in a grouping of 15 psalms that start with the phrase, “A Song of Ascents.” The exact meaning of this is not known but it has connotations of going towards the presence of God and his place of worship from a far place. So it is fitting that the two locations mentioned in verse 5 are outside of the land of Israel. For a reliable version, please read the English Standard Version.

In the past, when I desperately called God for help, he helped.

So now I ask you God for help escaping from the lying scoundrels chasing me.

Hey liars, you know what you’re going to get for all this?

An early, well deserved death!

Of course I would be stuck in Meshech and Kedar!

This place is filled with warmongers!

Unlike them, I just want peace.
